Fish Cancun!

The guys have been hooked on fishing since childhood. Danny has fished the lakes, rivers and streams of Georgia and the shores of the Gulf of Mexico catching a variety of fish. His biggest catch is a 27 pound Striper. Marcus has fished in Nebraska for Paddlefish. His biggest catch is a 43 pounder. We all decided it was time to leave the shores of North America and “Fish the World”. Our first stop was Cancun, Mexico. We chose Cancun for its beautiful beaches, azure waters and sunny weather the majority of the year. Cancun averages 5 days of rain a year and the waters are productive 12 months out of the year for a large variety of species.

We let our resort, the Westin Laguna Mar, arrange all the details of Danny and Marc’s fishing excursion. The Westin secured a private, 31’, fully equipped, six person boat with a larger cockpit and fighting chair. Upon check-in, we visited the Elite Concierge Desk to sign documents and receive their excursion information. Everything was taken care down to the taxi to get there. The trip was scheduled for May 2024.

The charter boat was docked at Marina Puerto on Kukulcan Drive in the Cancun Hotel District. At the marina, Danny and Marcus met the marina mascot Pancho, the local crocodile and his family. Captain Carlos and his First Mate welcomed the guys on the boat and they set off on their six hour tour about 10 miles out beyond the Continental Shelf. The sea was a gorgeous azure blue and very calm making the ride out smooth. They trolled for live bait and used Bonita and Ballyhoo for cut bait using Penn and Shimano tackle.

Marcus started off the day hooking into a Barracuda followed by Danny hooking a Mutton Snapper. Other species caught were Mahi Mahi, Trigger Fish, Dog Snapper, Amberjack and Rainbow Fish. All of the fish put up a good fight. It’s hard to believe the fishing was slower than average due to the full moon causing a heavy current. The best fishing is during the half moon phase, Guess they will have to go again!

Back at the marina, the crew filleted the fish and packaged it on ice. The scraps were thrown into the bay for the crocodile family and a school of very large tarpin. The tarpin feeding was an incredible sight in itself.

The guys returned to the Westin via taxi and delivered the fish to Duna Sports Bar where the chef prepared them for our dinner, The Duna chefs outdid themselves preparing grilled Mahi Mahi and Snapper as well as delicious fish street tacos with amazingly fresh salsas. We have never tasted fish so fresh and the pride of catching dinner for the family was well earned. Our dinner paired well with mango margaritas, Vino Verde, and fresh pico de gallo.

See how fun it was?!
